A detailing business that had to write its own software

Sam Huck started Definition Detailing in 2017 and quickly found that every business tool he tried was built for a trade that wasn’t his. The work itself was never the problem — the admin around it was.

Generic tools treat every trade the same way. They don’t know what a maintenance plan is. They can’t take a horsebox as a vehicle type. They don’t distinguish between a detailer working out of a unit and one working off a van, because to them a job is a job. Invoices have nowhere sensible for a registration, which happens to be the one identifier that matters most.

So he built the system he needed to run his own business. What started as an internal tool became the platform that runs Definition Detailing to this day — and in 2026 it was opened up to independent detailers as Buff.

He has won Car Detailer of the Year at the Yorkshire Prestige Awards every year since 2019. Buff is built on the same platform that powers Definition Detailing, adapted for independent detailers and small teams across the UK.

We are a small team with deep roots in the detailing industry. We are not a generic software house that decided to target detailers — we are detailers who built software, and who use it every working day.
